Stanislas Wawrinka added a win over Rafael Nadal to his list of firsts in a stunning run to his maiden Grand Slam title, extending his rival’s injury-cursed run at the Australian Open with a 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 upset in Sunday’s final.
The 28-year-old Wawrinka had never taken a set off Nadal in 12 previous meetings, but attacked from the start against the 13-time major winner and regained his nerve after dropping the third set against the injured Spaniard.
Nadal appeared to be on the verge of retiring in the second set, when he hurt his back and needed a medical time out, but he refused to quit.
“It’s really not the way you want to win a tennis match, but in a Grand Slam final I’ll take it,” said Wawrinka, the first man in 21 years to beat the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked players en route to a Grand Slam title. (Photos: Saeed Khan/AFP/Getty Images, Paul Crock/AFP/Getty Images)
Richard Sherman: The New, True All-American
As a citizen of Seattle, I’ve been aware of Richard Sherman for some time. I knew he was one of the best corners in football and had come from Compton to Stanford to the NFL. I knew he was a strategic trash-talker who goaded opposing receivers into committing costly penalties. I knew he was capable of an aggressive, boastful flamboyance that is at odds with “Seattle nice”—and that’s therefore deeply appealing to noisy Seahawk partisans seeking release from everyday sublimation.
What I didn’t know was that Richard Sherman was also ready to represent the nation. He contains at once three narratives that the great organizer Marshall Ganz says are key to social transformation: a story of self, a story of us, and a story of now.
In all the reverberating sound and fury since Sherman’s postgame interview, Sherman’s been derided as a loudmouth by people who once considered that a badge of honor. He’s been called many ugly racist names, and was depicted literally as the alien other (that is, the creature from Alien) on Twitter.
But let’s face it. Richard Sherman is as all-American as all-American gets.

Today in 1809, maudlin master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe was born. Known for such works as “The Raven”, “Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”, Poe was one of the earliest practitioners of the American short story form and pioneered both the detective novel and the science fiction genre.
Though he resided in many cities along the east coast, Poe is buried in Westminster Church and Burial Grounds in Baltimore, MD where he died under mysterious circumstances in 1849. Since 1949 (though this is disputed), the mysterious “Poe Toaster” has appeared in the wee hours of the morning on the anniversary of his birthday, leaving a bottle of cognac and three roses on the original grave marker after making a brief toast to the author. According to local legend, the tradition was passed from father to son(s), but for the second year in a row, the “Toaster” has failed to appear…
Despite the possible demise of a long-enduring urban legend, we still have plenty to toast to and here’s a few Poe-themed cocktails to get you going:
The name is derived from the main characters of the revenge tale “Cask of Amontillado.
Recipe adapted from Damian Windsor of the Roger Room in West Hollywood , from an article by the chicago tribune
Glass: Cocktail
Garnish: 1 piece each: lemon peel, orange peel, 3 Spanish Queen olives
Pour sherry, Grand Marnier and vermouth into ice-filled shaker. Express oils from lemon and orange peels by twisting them over shaker (discard peels). Stir; strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with olives.
The Poe-Themed “Annabelle Lee” Tavern in Baltimore features several themed drinks, including their take on the “Dark N’ Stormy”
an attempt at reverse-engineering the original drink.
Build in an ice filled glass, top with Ginger beer, “drag” gently to combine and add a float of Bacardi 151.

'I saw Snoopy': If the forecast of four consecutive days of 40-plus degrees Celsius (104-plus degrees Fahrenheit) temperatures in Melbourne proves correct, it will be the worst heat wave in the city in more than a century.
Canada’s Frank Dancevic collapsed during his match at the Australian Open on Tuesday. He later told reporters he saw Snoopy in a hallucination.
“I was dizzy from the middle of the first set and then I saw Snoopy and I thought, ‘Wow Snoopy, that’s weird,’” Dancevic said. (Photos: Aijaz Rahi/The Associated Press)
