An Excuse To Drink – Pancho Villa Cocktails
March 9, 1916: 100 years ago today, Mexican revolutionaries under the command of legendary revolutionary José Doroteo Arango Arámbula, aka Pancho Villa, launched a cross-border raid on Columbus, New Mexico. In response, the United States launched the Pancho Villa Expedition — aka the Mexican Expedition — on March 14th, pursuing Villa’s forces into Mexico using trucks and planes. The continue unit February of 1917, when it was ultimately abandoned.

First up, we have a classic from the Trader Vic Bartender’s Guide. Here is Victor Bergeron’s own description of this drink: “This’ll tuck you away neatly — and pick you up and throw you right into the floor”
Recipe adapted from Difford’s Guide
- 0.5 oz. Apricot Brandy
- 1 tsp. Cherry Liqueur
- 1 oz. Gin
- 1 tsp. Pineapple Juice
- 1 oz. Light Rum
Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass
Pancho Villa
Now for a more modern, but more appropriate — ingredients wise — drink. The ‘Pancho Villa’ is still on the menu at Victory, located at 339 Baronne Street, New Orleans.

- 2 oz. Altos Plata Tequila
- ¾ oz. Agave Nectar
- Juice of ½ Grapefruit
- 2 dashes of Bill York’s Bitter End Memphis BBQ Bitters
- 2 Jalapeno slices
Shake with ice and double-strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with 2 dashes of Memphis BBQ bitters.
