Epic 29-kilometre-long wave could turn Moncton, N.B., into an international surfing destination

Brian Hicks is a proud resident of Moncton, N.B., a city he has served as a councillor for 14 years and a place, he will tell you, that isn’t just some rinky-dink Maritimes burgh but The Hub of the Maritimes, with good shopping and dining and an historic downtown, with Magnetic Hill where the Rolling Stones rocked out a few years back, and with a zoo that it is saving up its nickels to purchase some “big cats.”

Moncton has a host of other inviting attractions that make it a friendly place to visit, the councillor says, but what it has never really had is much of a “cool” factor.

That is cool, as in hip, as in awesome, as in a place that young people the world over can get totally stoked about. No, Moncton has never had that, at least until this past summer and, again, this past Monday when city council held an audience with two Canadian surfers, Yassine Ouhilal of Halifax and Fred Hamilton of Sooke, B.C., who were in town to tell the politicians just how pristine and perfect and totally rad their city could be as an international destination for surfers.

Yes sir: surfers from all over put Moncton on the surfing (and YouTube) map back in July by riding the tidal bore — a metre-plus-high cresting wave that rolls in with the tide along the Petitcodiac River — from Belliveau Village just off the Bay of Fundy right into downtown. It was an epic, two-hour, 29km surf trip; a world record setting expedition like never before. (Photo: YASSINE OUHILAL)
